Summer Institute Overview

     This page provides an overview of the summer institute for the purpose of sharing information on the CLASP professional development program and activities.  Links are provided to more specific examples of institute activities and teacher products, including brief movies and images of teacher activity.

    The first day of the summer institute focused on the background knowledge undergirding appropriate science and literacy instruction for young children, laying the foundation for the use of children's journaling in the elementary classroom.  Next the summer institute introduced teachers to four different types of science journals that may be used in the elementary school science program: exploratory journals, laboratory/experiment journals, field journals, and narrative journals.  The institute provided teachers with practical instruction in ways of using these journals in the elementary classroom.  The second week emphasized instructional design.  Teachers developed instructional units that integrated science and literacy through the use of children's science journals.  The agenda topics for the summer institute are listed below, each day is linked to more specific descriptions of the professional development activities for that day:
